12V or 24V electric car: How to choose right

The doubt hits at the least expected moment. Your child has spent the whole summer looking at the neighbor's car from over the fence, or saw one in the park and now can't talk about anything else. You're clear that you want one. What you're not clear about is which one.

Twelve volts or twenty-four. The question sounds technical, but it's not. That number measures, in practice, what type of child and what kind of use that car is designed for. And understanding the difference before adding it to your cart saves real headaches: a car bought for the wrong child or the wrong terrain won't be enjoyed by anyone.

What's behind the voltage

Voltage determines the power of the motors, and with it the speed and response capacity on different terrains. It's not that more volts is better: it's that it's a different kind of car, designed for a different type of child.

12V models mount motors of between 25 and 35 W and reach between 3 and 6 km/h. That's roughly the speed an adult walks at. At that pace, a 3 or 4-year-old gets around the garden while you watch from the terrace without having to run. Most 12V cars come with parental remote control: you control from outside while the little one enjoys the ride. When they can handle it on their own, you put the remote away.

24V models are a different category. The Audi R8 24V two-seater with suspension has two motors of 200 W each, is designed for children 6 to 14 years old and supports up to 100 kg. It's also two-seater: two kids fit, or an older sibling with the younger one as passenger. That makes it a completely different product, not just a more powerful version of the same car.

The mistake that repeats every year

The most common purchasing mistake isn't choosing the wrong voltage. It's choosing without looking at the maximum weight of the model.

The recommended age on the manufacturer's sheet is a guideline. Maximum weight is not.

A 5 or 6-year-old can weigh anywhere from 18 to 25 kg depending on their build. If the model you like supports up to 25 kg, you're buying a car that in a year or two will no longer be right for them. Not because it'll suddenly break, but because the motor is working near its limit: the battery drains faster, performance drops and wear accelerates. To parents it looks like the car has broken; in reality, it's just become too small.

There are 12V models that support 30 kg and others that reach 50 kg. These are very different cars even though they carry the same voltage label. Maximum weight is the question we get asked most after purchase, and the easiest one to check before.

The other common mistake is buying a 24V for a 3 or 4-year-old thinking it'll last longer that way. That car isn't designed for that profile: it's bigger, heavier and more powerful than a small child can handle. And the €985 the Audi R8 24V two-seater costs doesn't make much sense if the child is going to spend two years unable to get use out of it.

Who the 12V fits

A 12V car is the answer when the child is between 3 and 6 years old, their weight is below the model's maximum, and the terrain where they'll use it is smooth or moderately uneven: family garden, park stroll, large terrace.

If the child is average build for their age and the space is a garden, the Toyota Landcruiser 12V lithium supports up to 30 kg and is designed for children 3 to 8 years old. If the child already weighs more or the terrain has some irregularity, the Toyota Landcruiser 12V licensed goes up to 50 kg with 2×35 W motors, a bit more power when needed.

For smaller and lighter children, the Mini Cooper 12V and Audi RS e-tron GT 12V support up to 30 kg, while the Mercedes CLE 63 AMG 12V and Lamborghini Lanzador 12V reach 25 kg. Within the same voltage there's lots of variety: maximum weight and design are what make the difference between them.

The 12V doesn't fit when the child already exceeds the model's maximum weight, when the terrain has slopes or is dirt and tall grass, or when the child is already 7-8 years old and sturdy enough that they'll soon exceed that limit.

Who the 24V fits

The Audi R8 24V two-seater with suspension is for a specific profile: children from 6 years old, with enough space to move it around, and where playing together is part of the plan. Two friends, two siblings, driver and passenger. With 100 kg maximum weight, it has plenty of room to grow.

With a 24V/14Ah battery and two 200 W motors, it handles better on terrains where a 12V falls short: slight slopes, gardens with grass or somewhat uneven surfaces. The suspension helps in those conditions.

The 24V doesn't fit when the child is under 5-6 years old, when available space is small, or when budget is tight. The temptation to buy the most powerful one just in case has a real price: nearly a thousand euros that aren't justified if the child won't get value out of it over the next two or three years.

Lithium or lead: what changes day to day

Within 12V, the battery type does make a practical difference.

Lithium batteries are lighter and charge in less time. Lead-acid batteries usually go in models with more powerful motors and greater load capacity. Neither is universally better: it depends on use and the child's profile.

If the child is small and uses the car on smooth surfaces, lithium is convenient and enough. If the child already weighs more or the terrain is less perfect, a model with lead and more motor power might respond better.

In both cases, basic care is the same: charge the battery after each use and don't leave it discharged for weeks. A battery stored without charge in summer and not touched until fall loses capacity sooner than expected.

The decision, straight up

Before choosing, it's worth stopping to ask three questions: how old is the child and how much do they weigh, what's the terrain where they'll mainly use it, and will they use it alone or want to share it.

If the child is between 3 and 6 years old, weighs below the model's maximum weight and the terrain is smooth: a 12V covers the need perfectly.

If they're already 6 or older, usage will be intensive, the terrain is uneven or you want two kids to be able to use it at the same time: the Audi R8 24V two-seater is the only 24V available and has much more range.

What won't appear on any spec sheet is how much they'll enjoy it the first day they take it out to the garden, with the sun still high and August afternoons still long. That's on you.
